What is cyber security ?
The world today is better connected than ever. Today, we don’t write letters and wait weeks for a reply. We prefer texts, emails and other modes of communication to interact with our colleagues and loved ones from one point in the world to the other. With the advancement in communication comes threat- Financial Terrorism, Cyberwar, etc. The world governments at present are contemplating the need for a global cybersecurity policy as they see a potential in cyberspace being exploited by individuals and terrorist organisations. Meanwhile, there are communities/ groups who believe the internet needs to be free from government intervention.
Cybersecurity is a protection of internet connected systems from threats. Governments and Companies store unimaginable amounts of Data on their computer devices. Information security is a part of Cybersecurity that essentially deals with protection of assets and prevention of data transfer from one device to the other. This data can include sensitive information about individuals- financial, health and personal information. With Cyberattacks being increasingly sophisticated, companies assigned to protect the data need to have systems to prevent threats.
Concern over cybersecurity- the deep dark web and privacy ?
The word ‘dark web’ itself sounds so scary and mysterious, we’ve also heard that it’s also been the hotbed of all criminal and illegal activities . ranging from buying master card numbers, all manner of medication, guns, counterfeit money, stolen subscription credentials, hacked Netflix accounts and software that helps you burgled other people’s computers is offered here at the press of a button. The dark web could be a part of the net that isn’t indexed by search engines.
Modi’s vision- what external ministers, IT ministers think ?
In 2013, Edward Snowden, a NSA whistle blower leaked sensitive documents which suggested that the agency was surveillance the domestic politics and commercial interests of India. After the huge public outcry and being under pressure the government launched what came to be known as the first National Cyber Security Policy on 2nd July 2013.
The vision of this policy was to secure cyberspace for citizens, businesses and government and protect individuals who can potentially be targeted by cyber threats.
In 2017, the Indian Government launched Cyber Swachta Kendra through a computer emergency response team. It is a computer and mobile solution to secure cyberspace in the country. The Ex- Union IT and Electronic Minister Ravishankar Prasad stated that the system will not only raise awareness among the citizens about the malware infections but also protect their devices from it.
In total I would like to add up that the world is growing so the social networking platforms, but to sum it all up we can be the only one protecting ourself from these breaches by taking prior precautions and measurement. It has become more important in the pandemic situation as now most of our life is in front of social media and technology.
